Message The signals on both wires are measured against each other to produce the actual signal. This is actually a better way of encoding the signal (don't know if you know much about networking, but RS-232 is line level while RS-422 is differential to allow higher speeds with less errors), but seems like overkill for a damn speaker.

I'm using an alpine head unit with the stock bose speakers. I found a box that will convert between the two different signaling methods. I think I got it at a local Hi-Fi buys, but I remember seeing them at Crutchfield as well. One box handles two speakers, so I needed a box for the left and right. Don't know if it would work for a sub.
